Is My Child Well Enough to Go to School?

Here is a guide from the Department of Education on when you should keep your student home from school.
How Sick is Too Sick?

Many parents are concerned about when children should stay home or attend school. Here is a quick checklist:

If your child...

  • Has a fever of 100 degrees or more
(The child should be fever free for 24 hours without medication before returning to school)
  • Has vomited or had diarrhea
(The child should stay home until 24 hours after the last episode)
  • Has any rash for which you do not know the cause
(Check with your physician/clinic before sending the child to school)

  • Has an illness
(Keep the student at home and call the school daily to report the illness)

ALL prescriptions MUST be brought in by parents.

The Cowan School Board requires written permission or the medicine consent provided above from a parent/guardian before school staff can give medicine to a child. Use your own judgement deciding if your child is responsible enough to:

  1. Bring the medicine to school, and on the bus without using or sharing with other students
  2. Turn it in to the Office or Teacher

All medicine must come in the original container from the store or pharmacy. Prescription medicine must come with a pharmacy label of student's name, medicine name, dosage, and frequency.

Indiana State Law does not allow medicine to be sent home from school without written permission from a parent.

                                                 HEALTH CARE PLAN
If your child requires extra monitoring or accommodations for their health conditions in the classroom, playground, lunch, extra-curricular activities  OR needs a plan for emergency care at school for chronic or acute conditions, contact the school nurse.

  • Vision Screening - Done in Grades 1, 3, 5, & 8  and all new students with School Nurse.
  • Hearing Screening - Done in Grades K,1, 4, 7, & 10 and all new students with Speech Pathologist.
  • If a child fails a screening, they are re-checked. If they do not pass again, then a referral letter is sent home to parents and a professional exam is recommended.
