Re-Certified Background Checks

The General Assembly passed an updated law effective July 1, 2017 to update Expanded Background Checks on all employees.

The law calls for updated Expanded Background Checks for at least 1/5th of employees each year over the next 5 years.  Cowan will be checking about 40 employees per year including subs and coaches.  Employees that have never had Expanded Background Checks and employees with the oldest checks will be first.

Cowan Schools will be paying the cost of the checks.  If you are notified that this is your year, there will be a link below to enter your information.  No payment will be necessary.  Cowan will be billed.

After your background check is complete, you should not need another check for 5 years unless we have reason to believe that an employee is the subject of substantiated report of child abuse or neglect or if the employee has been charged or convicted of a crime.  Employees will not be contacted unless there is a flag on the report.  Reports typically take between 1-5 days to complete.

Employees should always remember to notify the Superintendent of any arrest or report of child abuse or neglect within 48 hours.



If you have been cleared to drive a school vehicle, we also need you to begin a new Motor Vehicle Record Check at the time of your ReScreen.  Please use the link below to begin the BVR Check at Cowan's expense.  You will need your SS#, Birthdate, and Driver License # to begin this check.  Please contact Central Office if you have questions.
